The term ‘patient safety’ is defined in medicine as ‘the absence of adverse events’. This means that by maintaining the greatest possible safety for patients fewer mistakes occur. Because most occurrences of medical errors and administration of the wrong medication are avoidable!

Patient safety: Patient safety in the daily hospital routine
Every hospital must address the subject of patient safety and also define the measures that should be taken on a case-by-case basis. Safety precautions begin with newborns who have the typical small name wristbands attached to their wrists. This avoids mixups to ensure that “right” baby is assigned to the “right” mother. However, patient ID wristbands also play a role with regard to adult hospital guests since their names and any special conditions have to be visible at all times. The administration of medication should be pointed out in this conjunction, because it is exactly here where errors occur. If the patient is aware that he or she has an allergy to certain active ingredients and if the attending clinician knows about it, then this fact must be indicated on the wristband and in the patient’s file. An example: A patient is allergic to penicillin. This has been noted and the patient is therefore given another drug for treatment. If the information is ignored, this represents an avoidable mistake. Under liability law, an error of this kind is treated differently than if the allergy had not been known.
